Thin Lumber is made up of hardwood planks cut at sizes that are smaller than the standard dimension lumber of 4/4 in thickness, ranging from 1/8" to 1/2" thick. These types of lumber, due to their thinness, are most appropriate for use in situations where the thicker dimensional lumber would be too heavy, bulky, or expensive to use such as instrument bindings, box-making, inlays, jewelry boxes, small cabinet parts, laser cutting, scroll saw projects, and detailed craft woodworking where precision, clean edges, and fine surface finish are the primary material requirements.
When dealing with thinner wood, the pieces become far more prone to warping, cupping, or having surface imperfections as compared to normal dimensional lumber. A thin piece of wood that isn't properly kiln-dried, has straight grain, and is carefully surfaced to a consistent thickness throughout the board will warp, cup, or twist before you even have a chance to use it at your workbench, costing you both time and materials. At Exotic Wood Zone, shipping from St. Louis, Missouri, everything stock lumber board in our collection is kiln-dried to optimal moisture content, precision-surfaced for consistent thickness across the full board length, and hand-inspected for flatness and grain quality ensuring reliable, warp-resistant performance in even the most detail-demanding thin wood applications.
