Premium Bookmatched Guitar Drop Tops - Figured Tonewoods for Electric Guitar Builds
What Is a Guitar Drop Top?
A guitar drop top is a thin, decorative tonewood slab typically 3mm to 6mm thick glued over a solid guitar body to create a visually striking two-tone appearance. Unlike a full body blank, a drop top is prized primarily for its figured grain and aesthetic impact, though denser species can contribute subtle tonal characteristics such as added articulation and upper-harmonic brightness. Drop tops are one of the most popular upgrades in boutique and custom electric guitar building.
Why Drop Top Wood Choice Defines Your Build's Visual Identity
The drop top of a custom electric guitar is the first thing seen by both the player and the audience. Bookmatched figure, which is formed when two slices of tonewood having mirror images are joined together to form an image of perfect symmetry, adds flair to a simple body and turns it into a work of art. The species, figure grade, and color depth of the drop top establish the entire aesthetic direction of the finished instrument.

Frequently Asked Questions
A drop top is a flat, thin tonewood veneer glued flush to the body surface. A carved top is thicker and arched like an archtop or Les Paul-style build and requires CNC or hand-carving to shape. For carved top options, visit our Carved Tops collection.
Primarily, drop tops are a visual upgrade. However, denser exotic species like Ziricote can add subtle brightness and definition to the upper frequency range when properly glued to the body.
