Wood turning blanks are blocks of wood which have been squared or made into rectangular shapes, specifically designed for immediate use on a lathe for spindle turning, tool handles, chair legs, finials, and other types of wood craft work. While bowl turning blanks are measured across the grain, spindle turning blanks measure their width in the same direction as the grain.
The density, moisture level, and grain pattern of a turning blank have an impact on how cleanly it turns with the use of tools on the lathe, as well as how well it stands and accepts finish. Blanks that are improperly dried or inconsistent in terms of their grain can be hard on lathe tools and can result in tear out and checking. At Exotic Wood Zone, shipping from St. Louis, Missouri, every wood turning blanks in our collection is kiln-dried, wax-sealed for moisture retention, and hand-inspected for grain quality and structural integrity before listing ensuring a consistent, rewarding turning experience from first cut to final finish.

What size wood turning blanks do I need?
For pens, bottle stoppers, and small craft turning, 3/4" to 1" square blanks are standard. Chair spindles and tool handles typically require 1.5" to 2" stock. Furniture legs and architectural spindles need 2.5" to 3" heavy turning blanks. Exotic Wood Zone stocks all standard sizes across multiple species.
What is the difference between spindle blanks and bowl blanks?
Spindle turning blanks are dimensioned with the grain running along the length of the blank parallel to the lathe axis for structural strength in long, slender turned forms. Bowl blanks are cut with end grain orientation suited to face plate turning for open vessel forms. Using the wrong blank orientation for the intended project significantly affects both structural integrity and turning behavior.
