Red Malle burl is an exceptional wood with unique color and figure. It’s harvested in the Central and Southern Australia. The burls grow as small to medium sized trees. The wood is mostly available as burl caps or sawn burl blocks. It’s not available as lumbers.

Red Mallee burls are very rare and wonderful species from Australia. It can be used for making exceptional projects. The backs of this timber are natural and bark free. Mostly they are harvested in southern and central Australia. The size of these trees can be small to medium. Generally, the lumber is not available from Eucalyptus species. But, red mallee burls are prized for their unique color and figure.

The scientific name of Red Mallee is Eucalyptus oleosa and E. socialis. Generally, it grows up to 13-26 ft. The average dried weight of the timber is 66lbs/ft3. The color and appearance of the heartwood may range from pink to orangish red. The heartwood can be demarcated from sapwood because of pale yellow to gray color.

Standard health risks are associated with all types of wood dust. Without these, any other health reactions are associated with this timber. However, several other species within Eucalyptus genus cause some allergic reactions. The timber of red mallee is generally available in burl blocks and burl caps. The prices of them are as same as other imported solid wood burl products.

Red Mallee burls are not listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species or the CITES Appendices. The common uses of red mallee are gun grips, knife, turned objects, and small specialty objects.
