Drop top is a piece of book-matched wood that is dropped over a tonewood body back. Laminate tops or Lam tops are thin sheets of exotic wood that improves the look of your instrument. These Lam tops are transformed into a “bookmatch fashion”, which is accomplished by sawing the plank lengthwise. Now, the resulting halves are folded into a book format and finally glued in the center.

Drop tops are usually 1/8” of the Lam tops. Drop top is formed to follow the downward curve of the guitar’s forearm counter. Guitar is made up of different wood combinations, the top wood or soundboard bears more influence on the way a guitar sounds. So, it’s essential to choose the right drop top for perfect and quality tone of the finished instruments.
