- Grain : Grain is usually straight, but can also be irregular or interlocked. With a fine even texture and good natural luster.
- Color : Heartwood is dark reddish brown to nearly black, sometimes with a strong purple hue. Sapwood is sharply demarcated and is pale yellowish white.
- Strength & Durability : Katalox, a stiff and strongest wood, is a popular substitute for ebony due to its dark color. Despite its high density, it can be difficult to work with and can cause tearout during planing. Heartwood, a type of Katalox, is highly resistant to decay and termites but susceptible to marine borers.
